Who are the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity?

If you’ve come across a St. Paul Elder Services brochure or poster, you may have noticed a unique detail: the line, “Sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.”

For those of us who live and work in the halls of St. Paul’s campuses or benefit from its array of services, being sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters is more than a detail on a brochure; it’s the foundation of our mission.

Sisters on a Mission

The Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Sponsored Ministries is “a not-for-profit system of acute and long-term health care facilities located in Wisconsin, Nebraska and Ohio.” As a Catholic organization with a history spanning over 150 years, the Franciscan sisters are rooted in Christian tradition while continuing to evolve in ways that allow them to best serve their communities. Following St. Francis of Assisi’s dedication to a life of service, the Franciscan sisters do the same through their contributions to the healthcare and education sectors of their neighbors.

A History of Fellowship

The Franciscan sisters originally took ownership of St. Paul Elder Services in the early 1940s, when the Wertheimer family gifted their home to the Green Bay Diocese, and Bishop Paul Rhode tasked the sisters with dedicating it to a needed service. Since then, the campus and the services it offers not only onsite but throughout the community has continued to expand, including the addition of McCormick Assisted Living, its sister campus in Green Bay.

To this day, the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Sponsored Ministries oversee the operations of St. Paul Elder Services and can be seen greeting guests, serving on our leadership team and interacting with those we serve. Our shared mission and ministry continue to flow from the gospel values of dignity, compassion, respect, hospitality and stewardship.
